The Department of Environment, Agriculture, and Natural Resources is committed to driving sustainable economic growth while protecting the ecological integrity of Marondera District’s 3,414 square kilometers. Because agriculture is the undeniable backbone of our local economy, this department plays a pivotal role in balancing productive farming and resource utilization with aggressive environmental conservation. We work to ensure that our land remains fertile, our resources are managed responsibly, and our communities become resilient to climate change.
To safeguard our environment while maximizing agricultural productivity, the department focuses on the following key operational areas:
Sustainable Agricultural Development: Promoting climate-smart agriculture and supporting our diverse mix of commercial crop producers, livestock farmers, and small-scale market gardeners to ensure food security and economic productivity.
Veld Fire Management & Prevention: Spearheading aggressive, district-wide fire awareness campaigns. We enforce fireguard regulations and collaborate closely with the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), the Forestry Commission, and local firefighting teams to protect pastures, infrastructure, and human life.
Natural Resource Management: Regulating the sustainable extraction and harvesting of local resources—such as sand abstraction, quarrying, and timber harvesting—to prevent environmental degradation while generating local revenue.
Environmental Conservation: Safeguarding our natural, undisturbed woodlands, perennial river systems, and local heritage sites through anti-deforestation initiatives, wetland protection, and community-based conservation programs.
Waste Management & Pollution Control: Overseeing the safe disposal of solid waste and managing refuse collection at rapidly expanding growth points like Mahusekwa and Masomera. We actively enforce local environmental by-laws to combat illegal dumping and pollution.
Climate Change Adaptation: Formulating and implementing localized resilience strategies, encouraging water harvesting, and supporting communities in adapting to shifting climate patterns to protect their livelihoods.
